Chinese entrepreneur Liang Shi, 56, despite amassing substantial wealth through construction and lumber businesses, remains unable to secure admission into college. He sat for China's National College Entrance Examination, Gaokao, 27 times without success. His latest attempt saw him score 424 points, short of the required pass mark of 458. Liang's quest for academic accomplishment first began back in 1983. Following a nationwide age restriction policy for students in 1992, he was forced to put his college aspirations on hold. Despite his business ventures flourishing during this period, his longing for academia remained. In 2001, amendments were announced to the age limit policy, thus allowing Liang to resume his quest for higher learning. However, the recent strain of the examinations has caused doubt in Liang on whether to undertake the Gaokao in 2024. A failure, as per his daring self-imposed proviso, would lead to him renouncing his surname. Despite his significant wealth, Liang maintains that the attainment of higher education subscribes to a complete life. A reported 42% of candidates managed to be admitted into Chinese universities by 2021's close.
