Renowned Spectrum News NY1 reporter and anchor, Ruschell Boone, known for her dedication and charisma, dies from pancreatic cancer at the age of 48.

The New York City news world was struck by a heavy blow this Sunday as notable Spectrum News NY1 reporter and anchor, Ruschell Boone, passed away at the age of 48. The indomitable journalist, one of the most familiar faces on NY1, succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

Having been born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Boone moved to the Bronx at just 11 years old and launched her illustrious career in journalism 20 years afterwards, initially as a reporter for NY1 in Queens, back in 2002. Noteworthy events she covered include the buzzing Times Square New Year's Eve, the distressing Chelsea bombing of 2016, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's surprise primary election win in 2018.

Boone's flair was recognized through her three-time Emmy nominations, displaying an ease in chatting with everyday New Yorkers that matched her tenacity in probing the city’s echelons of power. In 2021, she transitioned to the anchor's desk, most recently hosting NY1's News All Day program at noon.

Heartfelt tributes to Boone highlighted her as both tenacious and kind-hearted, embodying the true New York spirit with a feisty yet pleasant presence on screen. Grace Rauh, a former NY1 political reporter, fondly remembers Boone as not only an exceptional coworker but also a genuinely kindhearted individual. Boone mastered parade reporting, transforming it into an art form, says Rauh.

Eulogies from New York politicians flooded social media. Councilman Robert Holden saw Boone as among the best reporters New York had ever seen. Council Speaker Adrienne Adams likened the late news anchor to a reflection of New York City’s charm and beauty. Mayor Adams was deeply saddened, defining Boone as the heartbeat of the world's greatest city.

According to NY1, Boone kicked off her journey into journalism during her senior year at Baruch College after filling in on a radio slot. She held a crucial role in NY1's COVID coverage and annually reported from the festive West Indian-American Day Parade in Brooklyn. She achieved a memorable live interview with a jubilant Ocasio-Cortez as she celebrated her triumph, a moment key to her enduring legacy.

Being recognized by her Nike sneakers, Boone stepped into her third decade with NY1 last year only to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly afterwards. Boone is survived by her husband, Todd, and their two sons, Carter and Jackson.

Mike Blair, executive vice president of Spectrum News, noted Boone’s courageous confrontation with her illness in a recent email to fellow colleagues. He praised her adamant resolve and unwavering journalistic principles that she upheld till the end. Even in her last days, Boone was still brainstorming ideas for her show and suggesting ways to uphold NY1’s reputation.
